How to Balance Family and Office Life

How to Balance Family and Office Life
Sandeep Sharma – mensxp

MensXP/ShutterstockCut-throat competition in today’s urban professional sphere makes it rather tough to separate the personal from work life.
Here are a few methods using which you can bring about a balance in your life:

1. Separate Phones

However ridiculous this may sound, keeping two different mobile phones for your personal and professional use are an absolute must. And this is not about showing off a hot-shot status. It simply makes sense!
2. Laptop

Unless absolutely necessary, do not switch on your work laptop at home. Make sure you take care of any urgent mails to be sent, project closures and other tasks while you are in office. Of course, this also implies that you must let your family be comfortable with the fact that in an emergency, you may be required to devote some time to work.

3. Plan Outings

Working hard can never be substituted by any amount of pleasure. So you need not suffer guilt pangs if you spend too much time at work. However, to balance that, make sure you plan enough outings with the family to give them quality time too. Make a family dinner once a week mandatory. If you do not wish to eat out, order takeaway, or better still, organize a pot-luck!

4. Work Calls at Home

Avoid taking work calls when you are with the family. This can be ensured by adopting the first tip – keeping separate phones. Follow strict work hours to ensure you do not need to attend work calls after office hours.

5. Personal Calls at Work

While taking work home is attempted to be avoided, you must also be strict upon yourself when it comes to entertaining calls from home during office hours. Make it clear to your family that unless it is an emergency, they should not disturb you during the day.

6. Maintain a Schedule

A well-charted career is useless without a plan. And this plan should begin from your day-to-day scheduling of tasks. Not only is this successful in your work routine, but also at the personal front. Make dates with your girlfriend and make sure you wrap up work on time for that. If you’re a father, promise your kid that game in the evening, and make it a point to reach in time, no matter how pressing a day it has been, or how pathetic the traffic on the road is.

Balancing work and family life can get difficult. However, with some careful planning and the knowledge of where and when to draw the line, you can taste success on both fronts!
