Karmic Ties: Estrada and Arroyo
By N. Mark Castro
Former president Joseph “Erap” Ejercito Estrada, a popular moviestar who had a long history of political career as mayor, senator, vice president, and president — despite winning with the largest majority in recent Philippine election — was unceremoniously booted out of office and replaced by her then vice-president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She wasted no time in prosecuting him and managed to insert herself for 9 straight years to secure the presidency. She publicly pronounced how “corrupt” her predecessor was. Prior to her departure from public office, she placed several of her key political allies in sensitive government positions, including the last-minute appointment of her former chief legal counsel as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who was recently impeached as well.
And in a karmic twist of fate, here’s former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, hounded by the same corruption allegations that she once brandied on her political opponents.
Despite her current status as a congresswoman, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo isn’t immune from the various charges levied against her by the incumbent president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Exciting times ahead as to who would prosecute him later on.
