Blink: A Thousand Years

By N Mark Castro

There are few songs in recent years that can elicit such strong reaction from the public, and evoke a mystical love that crosses time. The last I heard was Somewhere In Time from the movie of the same title, and even that didn’t have lyrics … until a Filipina singer brilliantly added it.

The original soundtrack of Somewhere In Time was composed by John Barry, however, the music of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was also used extensively in the film (Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini).

And now comes an obscure song that was catapulted into the airwaves because of the abhorrent film Breaking Dawn from the Twilight series.

A Thousand Years” is a song by American singer-songwriter Christina Perri, which was initially released as a digital download on October 18, 2011 worldwide. Critics praised the song for its lyrics as well as Perri’s voice. Bill Lamb from About.com gave the song 4 stars (out of 5) saying that, “Initially, it sounds just a bit sappy and even a bit twee, however, stick with it and as the Waltz time begins to sway more and more the song moves into a bridge that is stunningly gorgeous. It then melts back down into a gentle place before sweeping along into a pleasing conclusion.”

He also praised Perri’s voice, stating, “She uses her voice to a great effect sounding almost as if we were sitting with a friend who chooses to speak to us in a song instead of everyday speech patterns. Instead of pushing her voice to power through a huge chorus, she lets the backing track do the speaking.”

The official video intersperses lyrics with the voice of Christina Perri at the background.

The second version of the song included Steve Kazee for the Breaking Dawn Part 2 film and actually had a good juxtaposition of the male-female voice.

And I think that the most memorable part of the song that would be quoted by most young lovers would be:

I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And this is where Perri struck gold. She managed to awaken deep-seated feelings that have been buried for over a thousand years, and now seeking for its love.

“A Thousand Years”
Christina Perri

Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave?
How can I love when I’m afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone?
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow

One step closer

[Chorus:]
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What’s standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this

One step closer

[Chorus:]
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

One step closer
One step closer

[Chorus:]
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

To show you the potential magnitude of this song in becoming a cult classic, here is its piano and cello version.

Two things I love about the Twilight saga and Breaking Down.

1. This song

2. The End
