The Unusual Tom
By N Mark Castro
There are few enduring artists that have entertained the world, and one of them is this man.
An obscure Tom Jones initially recorded It’s Not Unusual, which was intended to be a demo song for Sandie Shaw. When she heard his vocal performance, however, she was so impressed with Jones’ delivery that she declined the song and recommended that Jones release it himself.
Since his 1969 performance of the same song, he has made a hit record for every decade he’s performed, evolving this song to such heightened proportions.
His electrifying performance has never dipped, with every song he’s sung, generating wild affections from his loyal fans.
And despite his advanced age of 72, performing this song has remained to be a must, in front of thousands of people, generations upon generations.
Aside from the numerous covers, interpretations and adaptations of It’s Not Unusual, only one man has forever staked its claim on it.
