Boys Don’t Cry: Janine Tugonon’s National TV Break Up

By N Mark Castro

The talk in Philippine Tinseltown at the time I was there was the live broadcast breakup of beauty queen Janine Mari Raymundo Tugonon with her erstwhile boyfriend Jaypee Santos.

My first reaction then was:

“Who are these people?”

That’s how out-of-touch I was in Philippine entertainment, and further inquiry involved me being educated by the security guards that Janine Tugonon was a 2012 Ms Universe First-Runner Up who, at the time, was dating a rather average looking guy named Jaypee Santos.

So far, so good.

But what happened next has now become a divisive issue that has taken a national level because when the couple guested on Kris Aquino’s show, she inadvertently broke up with her boyfriend on national TV.

Some people have accused her of being a heartless bitch with neither pose nor class in handling a private issue.

Some people have supported her decision.

But the real loser here was “dumped boyfriend” Jaypee who pathetically sang a melancholic plea of “Ikaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko” (You’re The Miss Universe Of My Life).

Desperate men do tend to do desperate measures.

Regardless, however, of the public verdict, the cat has been out of the so-called bag and the couple would go down in Philippine entertainment history as a footnote of what should and shouldn’t be done on national TV. It is quite difficult to lay the blame the naive ex-couple since the host, Kris Aquino, is herself fodder for scandal.

AWKWARD

Here’s the video of the interview:

As you can see, Kris’ hosting skills reveal her amazing talent for getting into where she almost always gets into.

How I wish Janine Tugonon just kept the details to herself. Some things are meant to be private.

Poor Jaypee… to have to stand there and be treated that way.

Here’s the video below but let me warn you, it’s one of the most uncomfortably inane interviews I have ever seen. It broke my heart to see Jaypee trying to smile bravely during the whole thing.
