Jakarta can provide one of the most unique childhood experiences you can imagine if you’re creative enough. More than that, the City provides opportunities for you to take your family or friends to join in on this fun.

1. That Car-Free Day in Sudirman

A bane to most motorists during a certain Sunday, the Jakarta government strictly enforces Car Free Sundays where motor vehicles are prohibited from entering Jalan Sudirman to Jalan Thamrin from 6am to 12 noon. That’s a three-mile stretch from Monas in the north to the Semanggi Cloverleaf to the south to do whatever you can with your family.

The car-free stretch cuts through the “golden triangle”, Jakarta’s business district, home to the capital’s embassies, business headquarters, and fanciest malls.

For tourist expecting local breakfast, Jakarta Car Free Day is a thing you don’t want to miss. Local food merchant are selling their specialties along the way. Imagine how nice it is to enjoy bubur ayam, siomay, bakpao, lontong sayur, bakso, mie ayam, ketoprak, sate padang, or the legendary kerak telor after sweating your body.

You might want to stop by at Saint Theresia Church and eat the siomay in front of the church. Though it’s a bit pricey (IDR 2500 a piece), it is definitely the best siomay in town! Expecting a good coffee? Drop by at Sabang 16 Kopi & Srikaya at Jalan Sabang No. 16B and order The Papua Nabire coffee.

You’ll also meet a lot of Filipinos attending the noontime English service at the Church … all of them praying for me.

You know, the Sinner.

2. SEA WORLD INDONESIA

Touted to have the longest walkalator in Asia, Sea World Indonesia boasts a myriad of rare aquatic sea creatures that will enthrall your kids.

SeaWorld Indonesia is the first underwater world recreation area in Indonesia with thousands collections of marine fauna in many different colors. SeaWorld Indonesia occupies a 3-hectare area with the building spreading about 4500m2, standing in Jaya Ancol Dreamland Park complex.

According to the brochure, SeaWorld Indonesia is carrying three missions for its existence, which are as an underwater educational facility, underwater conservation and entertainment.

And with rare sea creatures such as this, I believe them.

You know how you hate your kids to come him all sweaty and dirty?

Forget that.

This time, prepare them to get muddied. Go to the backyard, mud it up, and really let them have it. Or, if there are nearby woods in your area, explore it with them. Let them wear those boots and let them all get dirty.

Then teach them how to wash.

Thank me later.

4. Ancol Dreamland

Ancol Dreamland is the entire entertainment facility of Ancol, which consists of:
